A Narrative Inquiry into the Caring Experience of the Mothers of Adult Children with Developmental Disabilities
Kim Seong-Eun

Abstract
Objectives: This study explores the experience and meaning of caring among mothers of adult children with developmental disabilities.

Methods: This research applied the narrative inquiry approach in engagement with three mothers of adult children with developmental disabilities aged over 18 based on data retrieved from two to three conversations with each participant from December 2021 to February 2022. Inquiries explored participants¡¯ experiences in order to analyze the field text in the three dimensional spaces of temporality, sociality and place as proposed by Clandinin and Connelly (2000).

Results: Themes identified in the meaning of caring experience includes ¡°Crisis in maternal identity¡±, ¡°Accepting my limits as a mother¡±, ¡°Taking mothering as my fate¡±, and ¡°Transforming the meaning of pain.¡±.

Conclusions: Results show the caring experience of mothers with developmental disabilities and suggest the significance of the participants¡¯ meaning-making in enduring hardship with caring children and transforming mothering. Implications of the findings for counseling and future research are discussed.
